Blueprint Reading

Being able to read blueprints - and read them without misunderstandings - is a skill every licensed contractor needs. It is how you get hired for major projects, and it is how you estimate a job accurately: examining the plans to work out the materials, labor, and time it will take to turn them into a finished build. This introductory course is designed to take you from novice to confident plan-reader.

There are many reasons a tradesperson may never have had to read and analyze construction plans before, but it is a basic skill required both to become a California state-licensed contractor and to bid on and complete most jobs. You'll learn everything you need to read residential and light-commercial blueprints, with hands-on instruction from experienced professionals.

The program runs 32 hours - offered as four Saturdays or eight weeknights, in person at our California campuses or live online - and includes a copy of Print Reading for Construction, 8th edition (Goodheart-Willcox). It also supports students preparing for the licensing exam, including those working toward a General B or other building-trade license.

• Blueprint fundamentals - the common features found on residential and light-industrial construction plans.
• Drawings and specifications - the meaning behind the lines, symbols, and abbreviations typically found on blueprints.
• Measuring tools and sketching - so you understand exactly what an architect or engineer is conveying to the builder.
• Pricing and estimates - how to use plans to figure materials cost, labor time, and project details before you begin.
• Special blueprint types - foundation, framing, and system blueprints, each with its own notations and meaning.
