What does a C-45 Sign contractor do?

A C-45 Sign Contractor fabricates, installs, and erects electrical and non-electrical signs, including the wiring of those electrical signs. This classification covers the sign itself end to end, structure, mounting, and the sign's own electrical connections.

Per California Code of Regulations (Title 16, §832.45), a C-45 contractor builds and installs post or pole signs, structure-attached signs, and painted wall signs, and may wire the electrical signs it fabricates and installs. Service feeders and circuit work back to the building's electrical system typically fall to a C-10.

Important notes

A C-45 may wire the electrical signs it fabricates and installs, but service feeders and the circuit back to the building typically require a C-10.
Non-electrical sign installation only can also be performed under the C-61 / D-42 limited specialty, the C-45 covers both electrical and non-electrical signs.
Painted wall signs are explicitly named in the C-45 scope (CCR §832.45); the C-33 (Painting and Decorating) regulation covers general coatings/finishes and does not name signage.
Projects over $1,000 (labor + materials) require a license, and workers' compensation coverage is required once you have employees; sole owners with no employees may file an exemption (BPC §7125(b)).

Yes. The C-45 classification specifically includes the wiring of the electrical signs the contractor fabricates and installs. What it does not cover is the service feeder and circuit work running back to the building's electrical system, that typically requires a C-10 Electrical contractor.

A C-45 (Sign) fabricates, installs, and wires the sign itself. A C-10 (Electrical) handles the broader building electrical, including the dedicated circuit and feeder that power the sign. For a typical storefront sign, the C-45 builds and wires the sign while a C-10 may provide the circuit to it. The C-10 can also do sign-related electrical, but the C-45 is the dedicated signage license.

The C-45 covers both electrical and non-electrical signs. For non-electrical sign installation only, the C-61 / D-42 limited specialty is an option, but the C-45 is the full sign classification and covers the entire trade, illuminated and non-illuminated.

Plan on about $885 in state and processing costs before exam prep: roughly $450 for the application (both exams bundled), $200 for license issuance, around $150 for the first-year premium on your $25,000 bond, and about $85 for fingerprinting. Renewals and business insurance are separate.
