About this classification
The HAZ Hazardous Substance Removal Certification is not a stand-alone license, it is a certification added to an existing contractor license. California requires it to perform hazardous-substance removal or remediation that digs and removes earth at designated sites, and for the installation or removal of underground storage tanks (USTs).
Under Business and Professions Code §7058.7, a licensee must hold the HAZ certification to perform contaminated-soil removal and site remediation at designated DTSC or EPA Superfund sites, as well as UST work. The certification attaches to an existing license; bidding may be allowed without it, but UST removal work itself must be performed by a HAZ-certified contractor.

The CSLB exam
The HAZ is added to an existing CSLB license after the qualifying individual passes the HAZ certification exam. It does not require a new Law & Business exam. CSLB does not publish a fixed question count in the official study guide.
Adds to your existing license
Your license must be in good standing and hold one of these classifications: A, B, C-12, C-21, C-36, C-57, and C-61/D-40. No separate four-year experience requirement applies.
Submit the certification application and pay the $125 application fee. CSLB sends exam-scheduling instructions after accepting it.

Compare programsPass the HAZ certification exam. CSLS has observed a 66% score, but CSLB does not publish a fixed passing score and may vary it by exam version.
