Why Time Management is an Important Skill for Contractors

Talk to anyone who has been successful in the California construction industry for more than a few years, and they’ll tell you that finishing projects is only part of your success. As much as you need to master construction skills (the courses we offer at our school can help), you also need to make sure you can do things like develop bids and budgets, keep customers happy, and even deal with employees and vendors.
In fact, some of the most important skills you’ll develop as a California contractor don’t have anything to do with construction at all. One of them is time management – getting more from the available hours in your day.
When you master time management, you can finish more projects, do better work, and have more time to spend with your friends and family. If you have poor time management skills, on the other hand, you’ll likely feel busy and rushed almost all the time, and have to cut corners in your personal and professional time.
Because time management is so important for California licensed contractors, we would like to offer a few tips to help you make better use of the time you have:
Keep everything written down. From your schedule to your contact list, having the information you need close at hand (rather than in your mind) makes it easier to find, stops you from missing key details, and reduces the amount of time you spend looking for things.
Don’t try to do too many things at once. This works in two ways. On the one hand, you shouldn’t try to take on more projects than you can handle competently, and on the other, you’ll be faster and more efficient if you concentrate on one task at a time.
Be realistic with your scheduling. A lot of contractors get into trouble because they give themselves unrealistic timelines to work with. Know that delays will often come up when you least expect them and plan accordingly – especially when quoting schedules to your customers.
Batch different tasks together. Things like paying bills, answering e-mails, and ordering supplies are best done in batches during the week, rather than trying to fit them in at unpredictable times.
Schedule some time for yourself. We all need downtime, rest, and a good social life to stay in the right frame of mind. From time with your family in the evening to regular vacations away, try to make your personal life as big a priority as your business and career.
