As we noted in a recent newsletter article, success as a licensed California contractor can be two-sided. It sure is great to finally make it to the top, but there are also new problems and issues that have to be dealt with as your career and company progress.

One of those – and one that few contractors ever expect – has to do with burnout. Although there are a lot of definitions for this phenomenon, they really boil down to one thing: the feeling that you’re no longer enjoying your work.

Typically, burnout occurs when you have too many projects, too much stress, or not enough personal and social time in your calendar for prolonged periods. Once it sets in, you may reach a point where your motivation stops, and you have trouble doing the quality work you’ve done in the past.

Obviously, this can be dangerous to your career. With that in mind, here are five quick ways to beat burnout in your contracting career:

1. Take a vacation. It’s no secret that “getting away” is a great way to recharge your mind. Even if you don’t have a few days to spare now, put a date on your calendar when you can get out of town, so you’ll have something to look forward to in the future.

2. Get rid of your most stressful clients and projects. If you have certain people or tasks that you hate dealing with, now might be the time to move on from those projects. If you can afford to, begin a marketing plan immediately so you’ll be able to cut them loose in the near future.

3. Start taking on new kinds of work. Sometimes, our minds just need new challenges. Find another aspect of construction that you enjoy and try taking on a few side projects. It might be enough to help you get your fire going again, so to speak.

4. Invest in yourself. New tools, continuing education, and other investments in your business can make your life easier and get you thinking about new ways of doing things – all great ways to beat burnout.

5. Change your schedule and/or work routine. If you’ve been working nonstop for a long time, just taking a short break or a few classes might not do the trick. Consider adjusting your lifestyle and work schedule to give yourself more time off.

The best way to beat burnout as a contractor is to avoid it in the first place. Keep that in mind and set your work habits accordingly.
