About this classification
A C-16 Fire Protection Contractor lays out, fabricates, and installs all types of fire-protection systems, including the equipment those systems require, but excluding electrical alarm systems. This is the suppression trade: putting out or controlling fire, not detecting it.
Per California Code of Regulations (Title 16, §832.16), a C-16 contractor installs wet- and dry-pipe sprinkler systems, clean-agent and special-hazard suppression, kitchen-hood suppression, and pre-action systems. Electrical fire-alarm systems are specifically excluded from this license.
The C-16 is one of the specialty classifications general contractors cannot self-perform: two for B, General Building (C-16, C-57 Well Drilling, per BPC §7057(c)); and three for B-2, Residential Remodeling (C-16, C-22 Asbestos Abatement, C-57, per BPC §7057.5(c)(1)). Either way, a general must hold the C-16 or subcontract it, making the license a reliable source of subcontract work across nearly every commercial project.

California requires you to pass a two-part CSLB exam: the Law & Business exam (the same for every classification) and the C-16 Fire Protection trade exam. CSLS has observed scores of 65% for Law & Business and 69% for the C-16 trade exam. CSLB does not publish fixed passing scores and may vary them by exam version.

18+ is CSLB's normal applicant path. A minor may qualify only after a court appoints a guardian (BPC §7065.5). You also need a valid SSN/ITIN and 4 full-time-equivalent years of journey-level fire protection experience within the past 10 years; CSLB prorates part-time work. Up to 3 years may be substituted with approved education or apprenticeship.
