About This Classification

What Does a B-2 Residential Remodeling Contractor Do?

A B-2 Residential Remodeling Contractor specializes in making improvements to existing residential wood frame structures. Created by Senate Bill 1189 and effective January 1, 2021, the B-2 is California's newest contractor license classification, designed specifically for home improvement and remodeling professionals.

Unlike the Class B (General Building) license, the B-2 is focused exclusively on remodeling existing homes, not new construction. It's ideal for contractors whose work involves kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, painting, drywall, and other interior/exterior renovations that touch multiple trades.

What B-2 Contractors Can Do

  • Drywall installation and repair
  • Finish carpentry and trim work
  • Flooring and floor covering
  • Insulation
  • Painting and decorating
  • Plastering
  • Roof repair (not replacement)
  • Siding installation
  • Tile work
  • Install/repair electrical fixtures (dimmers, fans, lights, outlets, switches)
  • Install/repair plumbing fixtures (faucets, sinks, toilets, tubs)
  • Install/repair mechanical fixtures (air filters, grills, exhaust fans)

Restrictions

  • 3-trade minimum, every contract must include at least 3 unrelated trades
  • No structural changes, cannot alter load-bearing walls, foundations, footings, or roof structures
  • No new construction, existing residential structures only
  • No MEP system work, cannot install, replace, or extend electrical, mechanical, or plumbing systems (only fixtures)
  • Cannot perform C-16 Fire Protection, C-22 Asbestos Abatement, or C-57 Well Drilling

Can subcontract restricted work to appropriately licensed contractors.

How to Get Your B-2 License

1

Qualify

18+ is CSLB's normal applicant path. A minor may qualify only after a court appoints a guardian (BPC §7065.5). You also need a valid SSN or ITIN and 4 full-time-equivalent years of journey-level residential remodeling experience within the past 10 years; CSLB prorates part-time work.

Career Outlook

Why Get Your B-2 License?

Growing Demand

California's residential remodeling market is massive and growing. Aging housing stock, stricter energy codes, and homeowner preferences for renovation over new construction drive consistent demand for licensed remodeling contractors.

Lower Barrier Than Class B

The B-2 was designed to give remodeling professionals a path to licensure without needing the broader general building experience. If your work is kitchen and bath remodels, flooring, paint, and fixtures, this is your classification.

Legitimacy & Trust

A CSLB license means you can legally advertise, pull permits, and bid on larger projects. Homeowners increasingly look for licensed contractors; it's a competitive advantage and a legal requirement for projects over $1,000 (labor and materials combined).

Earning Potential

Licensed residential remodeling contractors in California typically earn $55,000–$95,000+ annually, with experienced contractors running their own businesses earning significantly more. The license is your ticket to charging professional rates.
