Your Complete Guide
Getting Your Contractor’s License in California
Everything you need to go from working tradesperson to licensed California contractor: the requirements, the exams, and the proven path that has helped over 200,000+ students get licensed since 1985.
A California Contractor License Is Within Reach
If you do construction work in California, getting your contractor license is the single biggest step you can take toward more income, more clients, and more freedom. A license lets you bid legally on jobs over $1,000, pull permits, and run your own business under your own name.
The process is straightforward once you know the path: meet the experience requirement, choose your classification, apply to the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), pass two exams, and post your bond. The exams are where most people get stuck, and where the right preparation changes everything.
CSLS has guided California tradespeople through this exact process since 1985. 99% of our students pass on their first attempt, backed by our 100% Money-Back Guarantee.
The Path to Licensed
5 Steps to Your California Contractor License
From qualifying to getting licensed: here is the full process, start to finish.
Confirm You Qualify
You must be 18+ (in practice) with a valid SSN or ITIN and at least 4 years of journey-level experience in your trade (gained within the last 10 years). Up to 3 of those years can be substituted with approved education or apprenticeship.
Choose Your Classification
The CSLB licenses contractors by classification (general building, general engineering, and dozens of specialty trades). Pick the one that matches the work you do. We can help you choose the right fit.
Apply to the CSLB
Submit your application with documented experience, get fingerprinted (Live Scan), and pay the application fee. Once approved, the CSLB schedules your exam.
Pass Both Exams
Every applicant takes two parts: the Law & Business exam (115 questions) and your trade exam. Both are multiple choice. Based on current CSLB scoring practice provided to CSLS, passing scores are School-observed: 65% for Law & Business and 63% to 71% for trade exams; CSLB does not publish fixed passing scores; CSLB sets scores by exam version. This is where exam prep makes the difference.
Bond, Pay & Get Licensed
Post your $25,000 contractor bond, pay the license fee, and the CSLB issues your license. You are officially in business and ready to bid legally.
Who Needs a Contractor License?
In California, anyone who contracts to perform construction work where the combined cost of labor and materials is $1,000 or more must hold a license issued by the CSLB. That covers the vast majority of paid construction jobs, from framing and electrical to plumbing, roofing, concrete, and beyond. (Work below that amount is only exempt if it also doesn't need a building permit, isn't part of a larger project split into smaller contracts, and you're not advertising as a contractor or hiring help (BPC §7048).)
- •Tradespeople ready to go independent, stop subcontracting under someone else’s license and run your own jobs.
- •Workers turning side jobs into a business, bid legally and protect yourself on every project.
- •Established crews expanding their scope, add a classification to take on more types of work.
Experience Requirement
The CSLB requires 4 years of journey-level experience in your trade, earned within the last 10 years. Journey-level means you can perform the work without supervision.
Up to 3 years may be substituted with approved education, technical training, or a completed apprenticeship. We help you document your experience the way the CSLB expects.
The Two Exams
Every applicant passes two parts: the Law & Business exam (115 questions on contracts, safety, and labor law) and a trade exam for your specific classification.
Both are multiple choice. Based on current CSLB scoring practice provided to CSLS, passing scores are School-observed: 65% for Law & Business and 63% to 71% for trade exams; CSLB does not publish fixed passing scores. CSLB sets scores by exam version and may change them. 99% of CSLS students pass on the first try, backed by our 100% Money-Back Guarantee.
