What to Expect on the Day You Take the Licensing Exam

[vc_row 0=””][vc_column 0=””][vc_column_text 0=””]

The moment you take the licensing exam is often the culmination of years of preparation. Here’s what to expect (and what you should bring with you), so that everything goes off without a hitch.

Where to Go

When you apply for a particular examination, you must wait for approval before you can take the actual test. There are several testing locations for the California State Licensing Board, positioned in various cities across the state. If your application is approved, you will get a notice that tells you where and when you will take the exam. The location is generally chosen in relation to the address you gave on the application.

What to Bring

Although the process leading up to the exam can be pretty complicated, the day of the test is often relatively easy to predict. When you get the notice of your exam date and time, you will be given instructions on anything special you need to bring. Otherwise, plan to carry the notice and a valid form of picture ID, like a driver’s license.

Restricted Items

The testing centers are highly attentive to providing a testing environment that is both useful to you and discouraging of dishonesty. As such, you will not be allowed to take specific items into the testing area with you, such a mobile phone, tablet or calculator. You will have access to paper and pencils to write things out, as well as calculators and a ruler. CSLB recommends leaving any valuables at home or locked in your vehicle. Although they offer storage areas for your use, they do not guarantee the security of anything you put there.

The Testing Process

You may receive paper and pencils if you need them during the exam, but the test itself is taken entirely by computer. You should allow 3.5 hours for the exam from start to finish. Don’t worry about being able to understand how to use the system. You will get a quick tutorial at the beginning to make sure you know how to proceed through the test with ease.

Scoring Procedures

Since the test is conducted by computer, your score can be calculated immediately. This means that you’ll know if you passed the exam before you leave the building. If your attempt is successful, you will find out at the test center, but you may not get any details about your score at that time. Most students at CSLS pass their exam on the first try, especially if you take advantage of all the test preparation help we offer. People who don’t pass may get much more information about their scores in various sections so that they can better prepare to retake the exam.

Rescheduling/Late Arrivals

Showing up on time for the exam is very important. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to the testing center, park and go inside. If you’re not particularly familiar with the area, you might want to scope out the center location before the test so you can find it again more easily. Late arrivals may be told to reschedule and pay a $60 fee. If you have to reschedule due to a serious problem beyond your control, keep documentation of it. You may be able to waive the fee if you can provide sufficient proof.

Special Considerations

Some people require additional accommodations to be able to take the licensing exam. Applicants with a disability can receive accommodations if they talk to the testing center in advance and give specific information about their needs. People who need to have the test translated into a language other than English can request to have a translator during the exam, but the translator must be approved before test day.

Getting through your licensing exam takes effort, timeliness, and the right paperwork. If you bring in everything you need and leave home everything you don’t, you’ll have a better testing experience.
