A Surprising Way to Improve Your Work as a California Contractor

When you are trying to succeed in the competitive California construction industry, few things can compare to hard work and a little bit of luck. But, there is one thing you can do to help yourself once in a while that most new contractors never consider: take an extended bit of time off from the job.

How can you get better at your work without actually working? It isn’t as strange as it sounds. In a lot of professions, it’s normal for people to take an extended break or sabbatical. This time is more than a paid vacation, though; it’s a chance to examine your own goals and ideas, think creatively, and consider new possibilities without the pressure of day-to-day work, demands, and deadlines.

If you’ve never had a good chunk of time off (for example, anywhere from three weeks to a few months), you might not know just how effective it can be. You’ll be amazed at the ideas that can come to you when you aren’t occupied with the same kinds of everyday problems.

Here are a few tips for making your extended break a reality:

1. Take advantage of slow times. If you notice that you have an unusually slow or empty space on your calendar, why not wipe it clean and use the time to recharge mentally?

2. Use your break as a way to make investments and improvements. If your company can afford it, giving yourself and your employees a few weeks off can also provide a window of opportunity to replace equipment, fix vehicles, and take care of other ongoing maintenance issues.

3. Give your employees the chance to step up. If you are an established contractor, you can probably take a break and keep your business going at the same time. What better opportunity to step back from day-to-day management and see whether another employee can take up some slack?

We understand that it probably seems strange to recommend time away, when most contractors struggle just to stay busy enough. But, if you can manage to give it a try, you might just discover that it does great things for your career and future.
